The sound of the train whistle echoed through the station as Kiki, MJ, LaLa, and Avey stood on the platform, their suitcases piled around them. It was Kiki’s birthday, and it was also a special day for another reason—they were finally going home to see Dad after months apart.
Kiki bounced on her toes, her short curly brown hair bobbing as she grinned from ear to ear. “I can’t believe we’re taking a train! And it’s my birthday! This is the best day ever!”
Avey, always the planner, handed out the train tickets. “It’s going to be so much fun. We even have our own room on the train!”
MJ’s eyes widened. “Does it have a TV? What about snacks?”
LaLa, the youngest, clung to her favorite stuffed animal. “Do trains go fast? Are there dinosaurs?” she asked, her light brown eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Kiki giggled. “No dinosaurs, LaLa, but maybe we’ll see cows or something out the window!”
All Aboard!
The kids climbed aboard the train, led by the conductor, who tipped his hat with a smile. “Happy birthday, young lady,” he said to Kiki as he handed her a small paper crown. “Enjoy your ride!”
Their special room was better than they had imagined. It had two cozy beds, a private bathroom with a shower, toilet, and sink, and a big window where they could see the world rushing by.
“This is so cool!” MJ said, throwing himself onto one of the beds. “It’s like a moving house!”
Kiki looked out the window, her face glowing with excitement. “I wonder what we’ll see!”
The Journey Begins
As the train began to move, the kids gathered by the window. The countryside zipped by in a blur of green fields, colorful wildflowers, and tiny towns with red-brick buildings.
“Look, there’s a river!” Avey pointed out. “And ducks!”
MJ pressed his face to the glass. “And cows! I told you we’d see cows!”
LaLa giggled, holding her stuffed animal up to the window. “Look, Mr. Snuggles! A big cow!”
Kiki, feeling extra special on her birthday, leaned back in her seat. “This is already the best train ride ever. I can’t wait to tell Dad about everything we saw.”
Dinner in the Dining Car
When it was time for dinner, they headed to the dining car, where they found a table set with white tablecloths and tiny vases of flowers. The menu had all their favorite foods—spaghetti for MJ, grilled cheese for LaLa, and a big birthday cupcake for Kiki.
“Happy birthday to you!” the other passengers sang as the server brought Kiki’s cupcake with a lit candle.
“Make a wish!” Avey said, clapping her hands.
Kiki closed her eyes, smiled, and blew out the candle. “I wished for us to be together with Dad soon,” she said.
Nighttime on the Train
After dinner, the kids returned to their room, feeling cozy and full. The conductor stopped by to tuck them in, giving each of them a small train-shaped pin as a souvenir.
As the train rocked gently, LaLa climbed into bed and whispered, “Does Dad know we’re coming?”
Kiki smiled. “Of course! He’s probably just as excited as we are.”
MJ yawned. “I can’t wait to see him. It feels like forever.”
The lights dimmed, and the kids drifted off to sleep, dreaming of their reunion.
The Reunion
The next morning, the train pulled into the station, and the kids peered out the window. There he was—Dad, standing on the platform, waving with the biggest smile on his face.
“Daddy!” LaLa shouted, grabbing her stuffed animal as she ran off the train. MJ and Avey followed, with Kiki bringing up the rear, wearing her paper crown.
Dad scooped them up in a big group hug. “I missed you all so much!” he said, his blue eyes glistening. “Happy birthday, Kiki.”
Kiki hugged him tightly. “This is the best birthday ever. I’m so happy we’re together again.”
A Family Celebration
That night, back at home, they sat around the dining table, laughing and sharing stories about the train ride. Dad brought out a big birthday cake with candles, and everyone sang to Kiki again.
As she made her second wish of the trip, Kiki beamed. “I don’t even need to wish for anything. I already have everything I want.”
And for the first time in months, the family felt whole again.
The End.
