Kiki and Avey’s Hanukkah Candle Caper

Kiki and Avey’s Hanukkah Candle Caper

It was the third night of Hanukkah, and Kiki and Avey were buzzing with excitement. The menorah sat proudly on the kitchen counter, its candles glowing brightly. The air smelled of warm latkes, and the sound of laughter filled the house.

As everyone gathered around the table, Dad said, “Girls, remember: the menorah candles stay lit until they burn out on their own. It’s tradition.”

“We know, Daddy!” Avey said confidently.

“We’re pros at Hanukkah now!” Kiki added with a grin, her curly hair bouncing as she spoke.

After the blessings, the family sat down to eat. But Kiki and Avey had other ideas.

The Idea

“Kiki,” Avey whispered, leaning over the table. “There’s so much wax in the menorah from the other nights. We should clean it out so it looks nice tomorrow!”

Kiki nodded, her eyes sparkling. “Great idea! And we can blow out the candles so we can clean it faster!”

Nearby, their mischievous orange tabby cat, Whiskers, flicked his tail and gave them a warning meow.

“Don’t do it,” Whiskers seemed to say, staring at them with big, knowing eyes.

Avey giggled. “It’s fine, Whiskers. We’re just helping!”

The Candle Caper

As soon as the adults were distracted with dinner, Kiki and Avey snuck over to the menorah.

“You blow out the first one,” Avey whispered.

Kiki puckered her lips and gently blew. Puff! The flame vanished, leaving a thin trail of smoke.

“Your turn!” Kiki said.

Avey blew out the next one, and together, they quickly extinguished all the candles. The menorah stood dark and cold.

“Perfect!” Kiki said, grabbing a toothpick to scrape the wax from the cups.

“Teamwork!” Avey said, holding a paper towel to catch the bits of wax.

Whiskers jumped onto the counter, flicking his tail in disapproval. “Meeeowww,” he scolded.

“Relax, Whiskers,” Kiki said. “The candles will be fine tomorrow!”

Caught in the Act

Just as they were finishing, Dad walked into the kitchen to grab more latkes. He stopped in his tracks, staring at the dark menorah.

“Girls,” he said, his voice calm but serious. “What happened to the candles?”

Kiki froze, holding the toothpick mid-air. Avey quickly hid the paper towel behind her back.

“We… uh… we blew them out,” Avey admitted, her cheeks turning pink.

“We just wanted to clean the wax,” Kiki added, looking down at her shoes.

Dad sighed and knelt down so he was eye-level with them. “I know you were trying to help, but remember what I said? The candles are supposed to burn all the way down. It’s part of our tradition.”

“But why?” Kiki asked.

“It’s a reminder of the miracle of Hanukkah,” Dad explained. “The oil in the Temple menorah was only enough for one day, but it lasted for eight. Letting the candles burn is our way of honoring that miracle.”

“Ohhh,” Kiki and Avey said together, their eyes wide with understanding.

Fixing Their Mistake

Dad smiled gently. “It’s okay to make mistakes. The important thing is learning from them. How about we light a new candle together?”

“Yes, please!” Avey said eagerly.

Dad brought out a new candle and relit the shamash, the helper candle. He handed it to Kiki, who carefully lit one candle while Avey lit another. Whiskers watched from the counter, purring as if to say, “Good job.”

The girls stepped back and admired the glowing menorah.

“It’s so pretty,” Kiki said.

“And now we know why it’s important,” Avey added.

A New Tradition

From that night on, Kiki and Avey became the official wax-cleaning team—but only after the candles burned out on their own. And every time they looked at the glowing menorah, they remembered the importance of letting the light shine.

Whiskers, of course, kept a watchful eye on them, just in case.

The End

Goodnight, Kiki and Avey. May your Hanukkah lights always shine bright.
