MJ and the Movie Mystery
It was a cozy evening at home, and MJ was feeling restless. He sat on the couch, swinging his little legs and chanting the same phrase over and over.
“I wanna watch a movie! I wanna watch a movie! I wanna watch a movie!” he said, his curly brown hair bouncing with every word.
Dad, sitting nearby, was reading a book and munching on a big, crunchy carrot. CRUNCH! CRUNCH!
“MJ, I heard you the first time,” Dad said with a chuckle. “We’ll decide on a movie in a minute. But first, let me finish my snack.”
But MJ didn’t stop. He started bouncing up and down on the couch. “I wanna watch a movie! I wanna watch a movie! I wanna—”
CRUNCH!
MJ stopped mid-sentence and stared at Dad’s carrot.
“Dad,” he said, tilting his head, “what are you eating?”
“A carrot,” Dad said, taking another loud bite. CRUNCH!
MJ’s eyes lit up. “I want a carrot! I wanna carrot! I wanna carrot!” he chanted, just like he had with the movie.
Dad raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure you really want a carrot?”
“I do! I do!” MJ insisted, hopping off the couch and tugging at Dad’s sleeve.
“Well, okay,” Dad said, breaking off a small piece of his carrot. He handed it to MJ, who grabbed it eagerly and took a big bite.
CRUNCH!
MJ’s face froze. He chewed slowly and then blinked up at Dad. “It’s… it’s not sweet like candy.”
“Nope,” Dad said with a smile. “It’s a carrot.”
MJ wrinkled his nose and put the rest of the piece on the table.
A Lesson Learned
Dad leaned down to MJ’s level. “MJ, do you know why I asked if you were sure about the carrot?”
MJ shook his head.
“Well, when you keep saying the same thing over and over, like ‘I want a movie’ or ‘I want a carrot,’ it makes people think you don’t really mean it. Sometimes it’s better to say what you want just once and then wait. That way, people can hear you clearly and help you the right way.”
MJ thought about it for a moment. “So… if I say it too much, it’s like I’m not really asking?”
“Exactly,” Dad said. “When you keep repeating, it’s hard for others to know what you really want. It’s like the carrot—you didn’t even think about whether you’d like it; you just said it because you saw me eating it.”
MJ nodded slowly. “Okay, Dad. I won’t say things over and over anymore.”
Dad smiled and gave MJ a hug. “That’s my boy. Now, let’s pick a movie together. What do you want to watch?”
MJ’s face lit up, and this time, he said it only once: “Dinosaurs!”
Dad laughed and grabbed the remote. “Dinosaurs it is.”
And as the movie started, MJ leaned back against Dad’s arm, quietly munching on a few more bites of carrot—because, truth be told, it wasn’t so bad after all.
